League update: May 2020

It’s been a while since we provided an update on where things stand with the league. Nobody expected we would still be in this situation by the time June was nearly upon us so we’ve been a bit quiet…

The 2019/20 season had a handful of games to conclude for both our Mixed and Women’s leagues by the time the lockdown was announced by the Scottish Government. However, regardless of how those games had finished, it wouldn’t have changed the final result for either league. Given the uncertainties around COVID-19, we have decided to cancel these outstanding games and confirm this season’s winners.

Congratulations to Eaglesham who have been crowned Mixed Doubles winners, while Old Parish are crowned Women’s Doubles winners! You can view all the results of games throughout the season by visiting https://langside.leaguerepublic.com/

We have still to play our two cup matches – the Southern Trophy (Eaglesham v Old Parish) and the Henderson Cup (Netherlee v Shawlands Trinity). We don’t have any idea on when this will be, but will work with clubs in the league to decide when to play these cups after government advice for the use of sports halls has been approved.

We had to cancel our annual Thornlee tournament which was due to run at the end of April in to May, at the height of the pandemic. We hope to be back with Thornlee in 2021!

Finally, although our season usually runs September – March, at this time there is still no certainty on when restrictions for being able to play badminton will be lifted, but we will plan as normal until we are aware otherwise. The clubs will meet when the time is appropriate to decide how the season goes ahead at an AGM, and we can provide you with an update after then.

Some of our league members have been working with representatives from BADMINTONscotland, Glasgow & District Churches Badminton Association and the West of Scotland badminton league to see how we can grow the sport within our communities, get more clubs and players involved in competitive badminton, and ultimately to get more people playing the sport that we love. We look forward to working alongside these groups to develop the sport.

As always, we welcome new players and new clubs to the league. We had a couple of enquiries before COVID-19, from new members and new clubs, and we hope you’re still interested in joining! Please get in touch – contact@langsidebadminton.co.uk

In the meantime, we hope that you all continue to stay safe, in good health and in good spirits. We can’t wait to see you all again when this is all over and get back on the court.

Take care.
