We are pleased to announce the launch of the LBDL — the Langside Badminton Disco League.
Following successful trials that took place in Japan, Langside is delighted to announce we will be the first badminton organisation in Europe to run a bespoke disco badminton league.
The rules of Disco Badminton are similar to regular badminton, with a small number of changes. Whilst shuttles used will still be of the feather variety, they must include LED lights to ensure they are seen during rallies (as matches are played in the dark). Elsewhere, participants must be dressed to impress, wearing either ABBA-themed jumpsuits, or flare-style trousers as demonstrated by John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Players will be given an addiitional 5-point head start if they use a racket which has been bedazzled with jewels.
Games are also limited time-wise. Each set must be completed in the same timeframe of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” which must be played on max volume on a PA system in the hall during the match. The winner of the rubber is not just determined by the points won either; an additional 21 points can be awarded to the player who gives the most dramatic lip-sync of the song whilst playing the match.
We will soon be launching the registration form for this event, and would encourage all members to sign up. In the meantime, please continue to visit our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts for more news, and for many more April Fools stories over the coming years.
As a reminder, registration is now open for our end-of-season tournament, Thornlee. The closing date for entries is Saturday 27 April. Don’t be a fool, register today!
