Launching the 2024/25 season of the Langside Badminton League

The 92nd season of the Langside Badminton League will begin on Wednesday 2 October, running until the end of April 2025.

Mixed, Women’s and Men’s League & Divisions

The season kicks off with an ‘old firm’ match between Old Parish and Eaglesham, who haven’t faced each other in a league match since 2021. Recently promoted to the first division, Old Parish begin their campaign with a home advantage against last year’s league champions Eaglesham. However, with a head to head favour of 10-3 to the visitors, Old Parish will be keen to start the season strong with their first win against Eaglesham since November 2015.

In the 2nd mixed division, recently demoted Orchardhill face Greenbank in the same week, whilst women’s and men’s doubles matches kick off towards the end of October.

League matches are currently scheduled to take place until Thursday 13 March, but reschedules can take place until the end of April 2025. All matches are available to save in to online calendars by visiting www.langsidebadminton.co.uk/events whilst individual club match dates can be found for Eaglesham, Greenbank, Netherlee, Newlands South, Newton Mearns, Old Parish, Orchardhill and Shawlands Trinity.

Langside Cups

The first round of quarter finals for the Langside Cups are scheduled to take place towards the end of November, with winners moving on to Semi Finals of the Southern Trophy, and defeated teams moving on to the Semi Finals of the Henderson Cup. The Semi Finals of both cups will conclude by the end of February 2025.

Finals of both cups will take place on Thursday 27 March 2025 at the Alastair McCoist Complex in East Kilbride from 7.00pm.

The full schedule of matches can be found by visiting www.langsidebadminton.co.uk/cups

Thornlee 2025

Thornlee, our end of season tournament, will be brought forward this year to take place on 15 and 16 March 2025 at the Sir Craig Reedie (Cockburn) Badminton Centre. Entries will open on Monday 6 January 2025 and close on Friday 28 February 2025. The exact schedule of events will only be confirmed once entries have closed, as it will depend on how many entries are received for each event to determine best use of court time. With that in mind, players are encouraged to ensure they are available on both days should they wish to enter any event.

As a reminder, only players who have registered with one of Langside’s eight clubs by 31 December 2024 can play in Thornlee. Full information closer to entries opening will be available at www.langsidebadminton.co.uk/thornlee

Langside (Competitive) Club

Finally, Langside have entered teams in to the Glasgow & District Churches Badminton League and will be competing in mixed and doubles divisions in the 2024/25 season. Captained by Linzi Greig (Mixed) and Stephen Hendry (Doubles), teams will be made up of players across the eight clubs in the Langside League who continue to produce strong results in matches. It gives opportunities for new partnerships to form and compete in matches with practice nights taking place on Tuesdays, with matches taking place on Thursdays — both held in sports halls in East Kilbride.

To be selected to play for the team, players compete in matches in our league and our end of season tournament, Thornlee. Following successful results, players are then invited to play for Langside Competitive by the team captains for the following season. Full information about the team can be found at www.langsidebadminton.co.uk/competitive
